Seminar of Accidental Wisdom: Sonia Voss

25.10.2023

Through this talk, Sonia Voss will try to establish a cartography of the inspirations and reflexions that shape her curatorial practice. Anchored in a multiplicity of fields, taking form in different contexts, her past and future projects have led her to constantly negociate between creativity and the faithful accompanying of artists; personal intuitions and external artistic challenges. The lecture will also very concretely address the role and statue of a freelance curator in the vast art (and more specifically) photography scene.

Sonia Voss is an author and curator. She recently co-edited a monograph on the Künstlerinnengruppe Erfurt, a collective of East German women artists, in the wake of her engagement with the East European scenes of the 1980s and her exhibition Restless Bodies. East German photography 1980-1989 presented at Rencontres d'Arles 2019. She was guest curator at Rencontres d'Arles for the Louis Roederer Discovery Award 2021. She currently works on a vast archive by Japanese artist Kusukazu Uraguchi. She also accompanies contemporary artists such as Isabelle Le Minh (Cristal réel. After Alfred Ehrhardt), Anton Roland Laub (Mobile Churches) or Thibault Brunet (Fragile) and collaborates regularly with French and German publishing houses.
